Knowledge management maturity

Knowledge management has become popular topic in the 21st century. The power of knowledge has been replacing machines and labour, hence, a successful company now depends on their knowledge workers. Modern company that knows the importance of knowledge and knowledge workers are starting to implement knowledge management in order to keep sustain in global economy. The other reason why implement knowledge management is to enhance performances and services, to be more productive and innovative, and to expands business.

Yes, knowledge management has been implemented world wide, but still few talking about knowledge management maturity. Knowledge management maturity describes the knowledge management implementation’ position within organization. Knowledge management maturity also used as a measurement tool to evaluate the implementation stages. Hence, the organization understand their KM position, whether is it success or not. Some KM maturity model uses stages of maturity level that contains of variables that act as a check point. The model is start from the lower level of knowledge management implementation, then it will increase to the higher level based. The more well planed, organized, and good the knowledge management implementation within one organization the more high its maturity level. 

One of KM maturity model is developed by Suresh & Mahesh, 2006 in their book Ten steps to maturity in knowledge management. It is described that there is five levels in knowledge management, that stated with nominal 0-4. 

Level 0–unmanaged, states the condition of an organization that has no strategy, administration or initiative for knowledge management. This is typical of traditional organization where 

Level 1–Localized, in this stage the organization has pockets where knowledge is managed explicitly as per a strategy. But, most of units still have no strategy, technology, people or process to manage knowledge. During this stage, organization is aware of the important of knowledge management in organization but still don’t have tools, techniques, and process how to implement knowledge management.

Level 2–Managed, this stage describes most units in the organization have a well thought-out implementation of knowledge management based on a well defined KM strategy. 

Level 3–Effective, the knowledge management is more mature in this stage, and the focus is on the effectiveness of knowledge management that emphasis on return of investment (ROI). 

Level 4–Self-managing, knowledge management is steady, and need little effort to promoting and monitoring. All knowledge management process such as acquisition, retrieval, reuse, rating and customization of knowledge are automated. KM is well integrated with regular business process. 

The maturity level describes the position of knowledge management within an organization, starting from no knowledge management involves to the stable implementation. Every organization has different level of maturity depends on the good strategy and supported by suitable tools, technology, process, and techniques. The management also has an important role in order to achieved the highest level of maturity.
